Data & Visualization
- Coastal Ocean Modeling Page - Fascinating set of movies that demonstrate how ocean water and sediments circulate around coastlines. Check it out!
- Physical Oceanography Archive - This archive includes data about sea-surface height, surface-wind vector, surface-wind speed, surface-wind stress vector, integrated water vapor, atmospheric liquid water, sea-surface temperature, sea-ice extent and concentration, and heat flux, produced by research satellites. This site also includes a guide to oceanography resources available on the Net which are particularly relevant to educators.
- TAO Observing Array - The TAO observing array of 70 buoys placed across a wide area of the Pacific Ocean gives access to real-time data about surface winds, sea surface temperature, subsurface temperatures to depths of 500 m, upper ocean velocity data, surface air temperature and relative humidity. This data can be viewed through various visualizations, plots, maps and animations, generated according to your specifications.
- Hydrographic World Map Generator - Generate global visualizations of annual means for temperature, salinity, oxygen, phosphate, nitrate, and silicate, taken at any level of ocean depth. Very good tool for seeing large-scale patterns of fluctuation in the hydrographic properties of the ocean.
- Topex/Poseidon Project - Great site for finding information about the relationship of oceans to climate. Includes a "Teacher home page", lesson plans for using the materials, a "Build Your Own Image" generator, animations, and a number of other features geared toward using the data in science classrooms.
- AWI Page - Follow the work of German scientists in the Arctic and Antarctic regions, in their research to understand the complex relations between water, ice, atmosphere, and seabed. Included is a Hydro-Atlas of the Southern Ocean with temperatures, salinity, density and oxygen distribution on-line, and a data base of polar and marine related documents on the Web and ozone soundings.
- Sea Surface Temperature Satellite Image Archive - This page provides access to the University of Rhode Island's archive of sea surface temperature satellite images. Dataset is huge - produces visualizations of sea surface temperatures taken over the Atlantic Ocean several times daily since 1979. Includes a lesson plan for using the visualizations.
- El Nino Theme Page - Datasets about climactic and ocean conditions, used to study scientific aspects of El Nino . The data are also provided in a variety of formats, including visualizations, graphical representations, simulations, animations, satellite data, and numerical forms. Great site! The data, organization, and range of tools found here to study El Nino is excellent!
- Data Zoo and Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) Program- These sites include access to a wide array of oceanographic and other scientific data from many different scientific research locations. Could be used to compare oceanographic (and other) data from diferent sites, or to relate a number of different phenomena occurring at the same sight.
- Ocean Research Institute Page- Excellent oceanographic site containing a wide variety of data and representations. See the plate-motion calculator, and the comprehensive list of good oceanographic sites!

Education
- Topex/Poseidon Project - Great site for finding information about the relationship of oceans to climate. Includes a "Teacher home page", lesson plans for using the materials, a "Build Your Own Image" generator, animations, and a number of other features geared toward using the data in science classrooms.
- Ocean Planet Exhibit - The online version of the Smithsonium exhibit of the same name. In addition to "touring" the main sites of interest, this site provides a wealth of materials for educators, including lesson plans that complement the exhibit materials. Overall quality of the materials on this site, and connected to it, are very high!
- CoAxial Segment Home Page - In 1993, a dike injection and eruption happened along the CoAxial Segment, in the ocean off the coast of Oregon and Washington. You can find out about the different chemical, geological, and physical processes set in motion by the eruption by exploring this site.

Research Projects
- Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (JGOFS) - This site contains information about the ocean's role in regulating CO2 levels in the atmosphere, and organizes the various research projects internationally concerned with the global carbon cycle. Great site to accompany projects on global warming, global natural processes, and the chemistry of environmental issues.

Institutions and Organizations
- USGS National Marine and Coastal Geology Program - This site describes the ongoing work of the US Geological Survey in their attempts to address many critical marine geological issues. Great source for understanding how scientists can contribute to the discussion about issues of environmental, economic, and political significance. Contains much good information about marine geology, though not a lot of analyzable data.
- Satellite Oceanography Laboratory Page - Fascinating site from the University of Hawaii, exploring the oceans through various satellite technologies. Many movies, satellites, photos, etc., which bring natural earth science processes to life. Lots of real-time data from Hawaii and the surrounding seas.
